"Excellent drill but overload protection a real problem" 2009-11-15

Overall the M18 is a great drill with an excellent clutch (that does not slip even with small twist drills the way the Hitachi does), good clutch mechanism, 2 speed gear box that is smooth to change, a bright dual LED light setup, and a sturdy case. It does not come with a bit holder or belt clip but you can special order the 4 parts needed and pay an extra $20 for what would have cost Milwaukee 50 cents to add to the kit - don't you love it when the bean counters are in charge.

The Milwaukee has a new design for the side handle that attaches the way the one for the Ridgid drill does at a 90 degree angle to the handle on either side. I prefer the old style which like those on the Makita and DeWalt drills can be anywhere in a 360 degree circle. With some tough drilling situations I like to have the "side" handle straight up just like a heavy duty core drill so I get more effective control over the drill twisting when the bit catches. With the Milwaukee I can't do this and so half the benefit is gone - can still use the handle but is it less effective than with the old design. The engineers probably wanted to make the drill shorter by an inch but this is not a good trade off in my opinion. Where I need short I will use a right angle drill which with its longer main handle works better in controlling any twisting of the drill anyway.

A couple of important caveats to consider before investing in this drill. It uses lithium-ion batteries which are known to overheat and catch fire so the engineers at Milwaukee decided to be very conservative and whenever the power draw exceeds a set level, power is cut to the motor and the LED lights go off. It is an instantaneous cutting off of the power so when using a large hole cutter there is a frequent start and stop and restart and restop while boring a hole which is not at all good. We use lithium-ion powered 18 volt drills from Hitachi, Makita, and DeWalt as well as the Milwaukee M18's and it is only with the Milwaukee drills that we have this problem at anywhere near this level. The only way to get around this is to start off at partial power and slowly add power, being careful not to run the drill at a full torque load.

The manufacturer's specs don't take this overload protection into account and you really cannot use the full power from the drill in situation where there is a high torque load at any point of the process. If Milwaukee had the circuitry designed to operate more like a slow blow fuse one might be able to get access to the full power potential of the drill.

The recharger is also designed to do a very slow charge so it takes 40 minutes on average to recharge the battery compared to 30 minutes with the Makita LXT and 15 minutes with the DeWalt DCD970 batteries. In theory this is supposed to result in longer battery life but on the job it means having a third battery charged and ready which is not something we need with the other drills. A nice touch with the Milwaukee charger is its plug which permits another plug to share the same outlet.

For really heavy duty use the DeWalt DCD970 is a much better drill for two key reasons. First is the more sane overload protection that has yet to cut power to the drill even when we have used it with a Blue Boar TCT Stucco & Wood bit to bore 6-1/4 inch holes through stucco walls and OSB sheathing.

The second reason we much prefer the DeWalt DCD970 is that it has a 3-speed gearbox. With a corded drill if the hole cutter is not very efficient (like a bi-metal hole saw or a self feed bit going into wood) it takes longer, sometimes a lot longer, to cut the hole but that is all that happens. With a cordless drill heat is more of a problem and when the power draw is too fast for the battery it loses a lot more of its available power and needs to be recharged after cutting fewer holes or driving fewer screws. The DeWalt DCD970 gives you 3 choices and it is more effective as it works within the "sweet spot" of its power range.

I can cut a hole faster at a slower speed with the DeWalt as it just keeps on turning than when using the M18 where the drill's power keeps going off and on repeatedly. The DeWalt is a smoother operating drill and I can cut 6" holes with a modern hole cutter like the Blue Boar TCT hole cutters and a 18 volt cordless drill, while my Milwaukee corded Hawg stud drill is maxed out with a 4 5/8 inch Milwaukee Selfeed bit. Matching the best hole cutter and the best torque range makes a big difference in how long and how many holes we can cut per battery.

We actually decided on a recent job to time how long it took to make 3 5/8 size holes in 1 1/8 inch thick Advantech subflooring and with a new Lenox bi-metal hole saw it took 45 seconds and it was smoking by the time the first hole had been made. With a Blue Boar TCT hole cutter it took 3 seconds with the DeWalt DCD970 and 5 seconds with the M18, and 4 seconds with a Makita BDF452HW drill which our light duty drill. After cutting the single hole with the Lenox hole saw it took more than half an hour to recharge the M18 battery. Now we know that getting a drill with a wide range of torque gearing and using a modern hole cutter makes all the difference in the world.

"Best cordless drill out there" 2009-08-22

I have owned this drill now for several months. I wanted to wait awhile before reviewing it so I could use it in many different applications, and compare it to other drills I have owned.

First thing you notice when using this drill is it's power. I owned the V28 drill prior to this one and I must say the M18 has it beat hands down! I use uni-bits or step bits often and this drill chews through metal like no other drill I have owned. Another thing I noticed was how smooth it operates and the excellent build quality. This drill should hold up to worksite abuse very well.

The drill fits nicely in the hand and is not too heavy. I would say it's heavy enough to know you are using a quality tool and light enough to use all day without straining your wrist or arm.

Battery life is very good. I like the battery gauges that let you know how much battery life is left. This is something Milwaukee invented which was a great idea.

My only complaint is the small case the drill comes with. Could use more storage for bits.

I would recommend this drill to any tradesman or homeowner alike who wants a good quality drill that should last for years.

First, I'll state that the drill itself, along with the M18 batteries, are great. If it wasn't for Milwaukee's poor service, this would be a 5 star rating.

I am a partner in a small home building company. We had previously purchased the compact M18 drill/driver (2601-22) and liked it, so decided to invest in their more powerful "flagship" hammer drill/driver as well.

The compact drill/driver came with extremely useful belt hook and bit holder accessories, so I expected them to be on their self-proclaimed "flagship" drill as well. When I discovered these parts missing I contacted Milwaukee, thinking it had been left out by accident, and they said they stopped providing them as standard accessories late last year. So, with shipping and minimum order fees, I had to spend over $20 to get $3 in parts. Very frustrating considering the high cost of this drill.

Second, the trigger switch on my drill died after 3 weeks of light use. I sent it in for warranty repair, and the current estimate is that it is going to take 3-4 weeks to get my drill back because Milwaukee for some reason is not making enough repair parts for this drill. And they would not just send me a new one. Again, extremely frustrating considering the high cost of this drill.

I have never been disappointed with ANY Milwaukee tool I have used, but this is a Rhino of a drill that will stand up to anything you throw at it! I believe these are all in plastic cases now (not sure of that) which is a bummer, but that's the way of the world. Plastic cases are great in a way, because they dont scratch and rust and stuff, but the metal boxes actually have STORAGE SPACE... a novel idea. All the plastic seems to do is protect the tool. I want STORAGE dang it!

Either way a great drill.

I got the drill and knocked out a wiring project in no time with it. The drill feels very solid and works very smoothly.

The one complaint I have is that the case is plastic, not the one in the picture. It's a good case, but when buying on the internet, you have to trust the pictures and descriptions. The case is an above average plastic case, so it's not a huge deal.

I only take off one star because of the inaccurate picture. The drill is five star.

If you are going to be doing any serious wiring around your house buy one of these drills, don't argue with me, don't cavil and whine that's it's too expensive, just buy the drill. Now Drilling between joists, or up into wall cavities, tasks which are a complete pain in the neck with a standard drill are almost effortless with the 3002. I had to run a bundle of wires through 12 floor joists, with this drill it took me about 15 minutes to drill all of the holes I needed and run the wires. Like every other Milwaukee product the drill is very well built and durable and if taken care of will last forever.

I use this drill at work on a daily bases and it has never let me down. The extra long handle is great when your dilling overhead. This model has a higher rpm than the standard right angle dill kit. The higher rpm's make drilling wood a lot easier. I only wish Milwaukee would have put the Quik-Lok cord on this model. No tool is perfect but this one comes close.

Milwaukee makes great drills, so it stands to reason that their line of drill bits would be top notch products.

These bits are a good choice for drilling hardend materials such as thick gauge steel plate. They are

I've learned the hard way that HSS and Titanium Nitride bits don't hold their sharpness well when pushed hard. Cobalt bits like the Milwaukee set are the only way to go if sharpness over time is important to you. The Milwaukee set has the commonly used sizes (fractional sizes) and will work well for years, regardless of their use. You can use these bits for drilling wood and plastic, as well as metal.

I trusted Milwaukee because of their reputation for fine tools and am not disappointed. You usually cannot find these in a home center-You might have to go online.

I recomend them to anyone looking for a good set of bits for drilling in metal and other materials.

They're good at that. They CAN be used on wood, but they were never intended to be do-everything bits that you would use to put holes in a wall to put shelves up or just use and abuse like they were standard HSS bits. These are not "the better bits." They are cobalt bits.

This set is really usefull considering it comes in carrying case. Neat and organised, good quality, durable, comes with extra replacement, and I think you can sharpenn it as well. It is not made in USA, it's really hard find any tools that were made here. But I love it It is still Milwaukee no matter how you look at it.

By the way it is cheaper to buy it in this set, usually you will be paying around 25-35 dollars per bit, so you do the math. I give it 10 stars and contractors quality...

"Old design best with big corded drills" 2010-03-14

I have used the Milwaukee self feed drill bits for years and dealt with nail damage and the need to use a large and heavy corded stud drill. It is a very old-fashioned design that is an improvement over a hand auger or a hole saw but otherwise slow and not terribly efficient. As self feed bits go the Milwaukee are as good as most and the cases are the best at protecting the edges of the cutters - at least until you hit a nail.

I was trying out our different cordless drills and found that it took nearly as long and very nearly as much battery draw with the self feed bit as a bi-metal hole saw. No plug to get out but then there are all the shavings that someone has to deal with. I found that my big gullet hole cutters with an extension would make a hole 6 times as fast and that I did not need my corded stud drill most of the time. Even with a triple top plate I could cut out each piece of wood with the TCT hole cutter and drop out the plug and then do it 2 more times and my total cutting time was 1/3 of that with either an auger or a self feed bit. Best part was that I could use a 18 volt cordless drill and make 50 holes with one battery.

The self feed are fine for wood but struggle with tougher materials and I would never use them on hard decking like Ipe or Hardie siding or backer board or many other places where the tungsten carbide hole cutters work great.

For light duty jobs the new Bosch spade bits work great on a cordless drill where a perfectly straight hole is not required. When I do need a straight hole I grab the Blue Boar TCT hole cutters and the Hole Pro shield with their arbor adapter for hole saws and make a perfectly straight cut every time.

XL-Arbor Kit uses ABS shield & adjustment knob from Hole Pro X and CL model hole cutter kits. Arbor adapts shield to work with both 1/2"-20 & 5/8"-11 threaded hole saws up to 2-1/4" deep to control dust, provide straight cuts & control cutting depth.

With corded drills you can get away with using almost anything as a hole cutter but with cordless drills in general and in particular with the new lithium-ion drills a modern hole cutter makes a big difference in performance.

Overall this is a great product. They drill really fast and do the job right. I will agree though at times when your drilling through a stud that towards the end, when the spur is past the end and already sticking out of the other side, you do have to put alot of pressure on the bit in order to finish drilling the hole. Compared to what these bits do for me, this minor setback really doesn't bother me at all. These bits will not cut through nails so what I like to do is carry an extra set of bi-metal hole saws to cut out the nail then go back to using these bits because they're alot faster than hole saws.

"Deceptive Lack of Marking of Country of Origin" 2008-03-25

These bits are made in China yet there is absolutely no indication anywhere on the bit itself or the packaging of country of origin. I have seen individually packaged bits at Home Depot and some of them are made in USA and some of them are made in China. The USA ones have USA on the packaging and engraved on the bit. The Chinese ones have "made in China" in tiny print on the packaging and no marking whatsoever on the bit itself. The marking on the bit itself where it says the size is laser etched and NOT engraved like the USA ones. So, I know after this examination how to tell which of these bits are which. I do not buy Chinese made tools and certainly not expensive drill bits like these. The Chinese may make some things OK but in my experience tools are not one of those things. Buy Chinese metal and it will break on you and it is simply not safe to use. Real pros know what I am saying is true.

I called Milwaukee on the phone to inquire as to why there was no country of origin on this set and they flat out lied to me and told me that the bits are made in the USA. I told this person that I have never seen a US made tool in my life that did not bear "made in USA" markings and that these bits have no such markings. I also told her that her information cannot be correct as I have seen "made in China" on individual bits in Home Depot. These bits are simply too expensive to be made in China.

Look elsewhere.

These things tear through wood like there is no tomorrow. Yes, everything the other poster said is true. You do have to put some pressure to make that last little cut through the stud, and they can clog themselves going through multiple plates. But man do these things work. They literally pull themselves through 90% of the board. Not that you want to, but you can also cut through nails with these bits. After having used them to rough in various wires and pipes on my house, I couldn't imagine not having them for future rough-in work. They work superbly. You do need a drill with a 1/2" chuck if you are not using a Hole-Dawg.

It is not a total substitute for a permanent power winch on a 43' sailboat. Easy operation for the initial grinding on the main halyard or a jib sheet but will fault out (stop) when it gets close to the end (last 4-6 feet). Easy to handle as long as the winch is self-tailing.

I'm an electrician working in the bay area and this tool is new to our truck. We just finished our first big job using it exclusively. The convenience of this tool is amazing. It works steady and compared to our super hog it works slow but by the time the super hog is set up this drill has made the hole and is back in the box. I really wish milwaukee could figure out a way to adjust the angle of the neck without the use of wrenches but this is their standby right angle drill design and I guess they are sticking with it. Battery life is good and we use three V 28 tools now so lots of batteries kicking around makes everything convenient. We will buy more of these in the future.

The product is extremely heavy duty and works for everything you'll need a right angle drill for. I have a 28v hammer drill and a 28v impact wrench as well and they all perform exactly as described from the manufacturer. For the price, the 28v units are pretty pricy. The fact that they are so expensive and there is only 1 battery is the only reason I gave it 4 stars. If this review was based on the quality alone, it definelty gets a 5.

I have been using this item for about a week now and it is impressive! With almost 1100 in/lbs of torque this drill eats through 2x studs like you would not believe! This item really lives up to the claim of corded performance without the cords. The batteries last longer than any NiCd on the market. I would have like it to have a keyless chuck as the keyed chucks are a little less convenient. A rep for milwaukee said they tried the keyless chucks but the bit would slip so I guess they did the right thing in making the keyed chuck. It can also be inconvenient to adjust the drill although it can be rotated a full 360 degrees which is a great feature. Otherwise a must have for plumbers and electricians!

"save your money" 2009-11-25

I am an electrician who needs tools that will work every day, these were not it! Have had the same kit for one year, except mine came with the impact instead of the circular. The impact and flashlight are the only two I have been satisfied with. When the sawzall bogs down/jams on the material slightly, which it does often, the battery drains instantly. I made two 8"cuts on a 1/4 " piece of plywood the other day and the battery was dead. Almost useless. The V18 hammer drill that came with the kit caught on fire after one year as well. Haven't tried to get it fixed yet..........Very disappointing. I once was a Milwaukee fan, not any more. Wanted to warn others, so they would not make the same very expensive mistake of a purchase.

I've owned the Milwaukee combo for about a month and used it on two small projects so far. It repalces my old 14.4 Nicad combo. The drill is a little heavier than the 14.4 drill but the extra torque and battery life are worth it. The keyless chuck system works well. The trim saw works especially well compared to the old one. The blade depth lock was a little difficult to loosen the first time but worked well since. I have only used the recipricating saw once to cut out a window jamb. It worked well in cutting through the wood and the nails. The charging system works quickly and shuts off when done something my old system did not do. The fuel gauge on the batteries is helpfull in knowing when to charge. As billed there is no power loss as the battery is depleted.

This package should suit my needs for years to come.

If you are not already married to Milwaukee I WOULD STRONGLY SUGGEST you buy DeWalt or Makita. While the Milwaukee tools themselves are very good, the battery systems suck!!! Read all the problems the NiCads have had, I personally have trashed 7 of them. The V series Lith Ions ARE better but if they are so good THEN WHY DID MILWAUKEE CHANGE THE MOUNTS ON THE M SERIES so they don't fit the V series or NiCad tools!!! Shame on Milwaukee for not passing on the benefits of their newest technology to existing customers

"Durable Performers" 2009-05-15

Bought this set 10 months ago for me and my help to use for demoing siding, trim, decks, fences, etc. I have a Makita LXT 601 kit for myself. This kit is very durable and powerful for an 18 volt Li set. Batteries slightly outlast the Makitas and well outlast the older Porter-Cable 19.2 volt kit I passed down after 4 1/2 years of use. Outlasts dewalt 18v XRPs (brother's set) The tools themselves are what you would expect fron Milwaukee. The Sawzall has a good handle and front grip, the blade clamp never lets go during a cut and the variable speed is right. Circular saw holds it's adjustments and has a nice baseplate, it's also as powerful, but the lower guard hangs up a bit. The Drill doesn't get used much and is pretty hefty, but it's always the one I get for tougher drilling or using a hole saw. The light works.

Batteries went out at about 180 charges but are under warranty and Milwaukee customer service is very good. These batteries now have a new and better cell formula, so I'm told by a Milwaukee rep. Overall the kit is well built... definately not the lightest or most compact, but a good set for an aggressive builder.

"Beware of old batteries" 2009-05-07

I ordered this set to replace a DeWalt set that was on its last legs. After doing much research, I determined that Milwaukee is at the peak of the price/performance curve for Li tools. I settled on the 4 tool pack (why the flashlight counts as a tool escapes me) knowing these 3 tools would meet most of my needs.

A couple days after receiving the tools and charging each battery thoroughly, I put them to use tearing down an existing deck on the back of my house. I was immediately disappointed. The Sawzall died after about 3 cuts. I tried the other battery with only slightly better results. I finished the job with corded tools, then called customer service. They recommended I take the tools to a service center. The service guy determined the batteries were bad and replaced them both. I then charged these batteries and put the drill to work screwing down backerboard for a tile job.....same poor performance.

Next I called Milwaukee in CA. They had me ship the drill, charger, and replacement batteries to them. 6 days later I got the tools back, with 2 new batteries. That made all the difference. These new batteries are incredible. Power and torque like you wouldn't believe.

So, what was the issue with 4 DOA batteries. My theory goes like this....the local tech taught me how to decode the serial number on the bottom of the battery. Turns out the batteries I got originally and the first set of replacements were all manufactured during the 42nd week of 2006. Must have been a bad run. The new replacements are 14th week of 2009. Bottom line, don't settle for poor performance. If these tools don't work great, get with Milwaukee. And beware of Li batteries made in the 42nd week of 2006.

This is a great product. Lots of power, long battery life, fast charging. Uses ANY sawzall blades (you don't need to buy special ones). The drill is a nice bonus, but it only can use drill bits with the rapid change indent thing on the end of the bit, it is not a true chuck. Just FYI. I missed that when I bought it, but luckily all of my drill bits have that indent thing. As you can tell, I am not a handywoman, but I redid my whole powder room (drywall and all), with this set. Turned out very nice. The two batteries the set comes with are great.

The drill is a great quality pruduct as you would expect from Milwaukee. The only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the Hackzall Saw. It too is well built and made to last, but the reciprocating travel of the blade going back and forth just is'nt enough. It has it's purposes here and there, but don't expect this Hackzall to do what a full size Sawzall can. I bought a few pruning blades to go with it and it works great on live trees, otherwise it just lays there and collects dust. I highly recommend the drill but not the saw.

Purchased more for the small hackzall but the combo works great. Plus with the 'get a free tool offer' I also add the impact driver, so now I get 3 tools for less than $180. The saw does countless things for many different projects. The driver is small and handy for a 12v unit. I have other brands that are larger and heavier at that voltage and no longer use. Many reviews drool over the Makita models with their bells but I'm satisfied with this purchase.

Follow up: After some use the drills are still great for intended design purpose. The only issue with the hackzall is that it will overheat and stop cutting medium duty things like small tree branches. Keep it light duty (as intended) and it's still recommended. Battery life has also been above average.

I bought the hackzall many months ago, and was initially unimpressed with it, comparing it to my Sawzall and Sawzall Hatchet. BUT - after having it on hand for a number of months, I can now say that this is a GREAT tool, for those specific jobs where a real sawzall can't fit, or for any job where you would consider using a hand saw of any kind. The portability is a huge plus. The number of uses for this tool continue to expand, based on how handy it is to have around. The driver-drill is at least as good as the Bosch unit, and the locking collet design is a nice plus.

All in all, a tool package well worth the price. The only negative I can still find at this point is the cloth carrying bag. There are no hold-downs for the tools, so everything tends to get jumbled up and tools bang into each other in transit. At least some sort of pockets or velcro tie-downs would be an improvement.

This thing is a real work horse. It's got the torque to drill through anything. Before when I needed a drill such as this, I either borrowed one or rented one. But when I saw the price I bought it with no hesitation. I've bought other Milwaukee reconditioned tools before and they performed flawlessly. This drill performs and delivers like a new one. When I knew that I had some remodel work to do I knew I had to get this knowing that I could use it without the meter running. I can also take off the angle drive and use this drill to mix tile grout and ect. This thing rocks. Ive never had a problem with any Milwaukee poer tools.

This drill has been great. It was a factory-reconditioned drill, but I wouldn't have been able to tell except for the stickers that said so. No dings or scratches on this drill when it came. I did have to change the 90 degree attachment around because it was on the faster setting and I wanted the slower setting. That wasn't to easy because I couldn't remove the chuck. I had to take it to a motor repair shop where they removed the chuck fairly easy because they have the right tools. And they didn't charge me. But as far as the drill works, it is great. Very happy with the drill and the price compared to brand new.

I have not used it much yet but like what I have

This tore right through a series of joists (end-to-end of an attic) followed by some doubled up studs at an awkward angle -- stuff that would have destroyed prior drills I have. So far this thing is solid -- the other reviews are on target.

I wanted to get the version of the drill with a slightly higher RPM but opted for the much less expensive refurbished version.

The pros:

Solid milwaukee drill - this type of corded tool is right in milwaukee's wheelhouse as far as what they do well.

The cons:

It is pretty heavy, corded, and you need a wrench to change the direction of the bit or swap the chuck. Per the description you can change the RPM by reversing the right angle chuck. All of these items are the trade-offs for getting a pretty solid tool that will stand up to a beating so they do not detract from the star rating at all; just worth knowing.

The only item I found annoying was someone's initials scratched into the handle -- easily corrected by scratching them out but that is the other trade-off for a cheaper, refurbished drill.

I purchased this reconditioned drill due to the combination of capabilities and price. Generally I have found reconditioned products to be superior to factory new. They have had personal attention and been gone through at a level that doesn't normally happen on the assembly line. This drill arrived looking like new. If it weren't for the reconditioned stickers on the case, I would have thought it was new.

The only niggles that I have are that the hex key for the screw that secures the chuck was missing, and that the design of the rotation collar makes it difficult to loosen and tighten the bolt nearest the drill body. These are very minor flaws in an otherwise superb product.

"Good heavy duty drill" 2009-11-24

I'm very satisfied with this drill. I bought it for use with self-feed bits for drilling through joists, etc, and it has worked out very well. It feels like it will last the rest of my life, if not longer. It wasn't immediately obvious to me from the description that the High/Low gearing is not selectable with a switch -- instead it involves removing the right-angle mechanism, removing the chuck, putting the chuck on the other side of the right-angle mechanism, and re-attaching. Not a quick operation. But for my purposes, I leave it on Low all the time anyway. As far as speed control, it is true variable-speed (trigger controlled), just as you'd expect, but I wasn't 100% sure on that from the description either.

Nice piece of gear. The radio sounds very good for its size. The drill feels and functions as expected from a premium product. Very well balanced, ample torque and speed. My only issue is that I'm used to longer battery life but, I've been using a larger (18v) drill with a much bigger battery for several years. Besides, the extra battery charges fast enough that there is no wait time.

I would recommend this drill for anyone who is looking for a dependable product whether their needs be casual or high use.

I love both of these tools. The drill is better (larger, more powerful) than the first version, and somewhat larger. I like the chuck. Oddly, this is a 12v tool and in the old days we wanted much more power from the 9v Makitas to 14v Milwaukee and dewalts, to the 18v to the 28v LiOns of today. Now to start over at 12 again sometimes seems funny to me.

The radio works great and is perfect for an ipod touch. However, the battery life seems a little short and once again Milwaukee has chosen not to allow AC operation to charge the battery. Whatever!

Drill: Great drill. The chuck is real nice. A bit heavy but that's because it's made well.

Radio: After reading all the good reviews I felt a little let down. I was primarily disappointed with the sound. Even though it has an "equalizer" it's just a bass and treble setting.

On the plus side, the MP3 compartment is great and the side handles are a nice touch. Not the greatest radio but it's better than silence.

This is a great little combo kit.

The radio:

-is convenient.

-is relatively small, in size, weight and sound.

-is not going to fill a big space with sound, but it sounds fine, albeit a little tinny. (However, I don't think you could expect more for the price and size.)

-seems to last a long time on a 12v battery.

-does not have a handle on top but has 2 side handles which are great for carrying it around.

-has a useful ipod/mp3 player compartment--it's a little work to get the ipod in there, but once in there, it is pretty secure--you can turn the ipod on, close the compartment, turn on the radio, hold it with one hand by one of the handles and listen as you swing it back and forth as you walk. Note, it's a little bit of a hassle to access the compartment if it's closed--so you may want to rely on playlists/shuffle in that case.

-includes a plug so that you can run it off a/c power.

-does NOT include a charger function -- i.e., your 12v battery cannot be charged by the radio when plugged in. (that would probably increase the weight)

The drill/driver:

-seems solid

-seems to have pretty good power (but I wouldn't want to try to build a deck with it)

-seems well suited for around-the-house tasks

-lasts a long time on a charge

-is pretty comfortable

-has forward/reverse buttons that are a little awkward in their placement but they're workable

-does NOT have a holder for bits.

A nylon bag is included that will hold everything in the kit with some room to spare so you can include bits and one or more (depending on the size) m12 tools--the light and another driver would definitely fit into the bag also. This is much more useful than a molded plastic case. I like that they didn't make the bag an exact fit -- that would be too small. I have seen tougher nylon tool bags but this one seems like it will last a while.

All in all a nice combo kit and a pretty good bargain.

The Milwaukee close quarter is the best power tool I've bought in a long time. Gets the job done with power and with ease. I do agree with the guy who is getting rid of his on one score: The large trigger, which is part of what makes the tool so easy to use, can be a hazard if you're not paying attention. It is indeed very easy to activate accidentally, and especially when changing (ouch) bits. It just takes some getting used to. It's like a fine sports car--a perfect performer once you get used to its quirks!

I had to replace the predecessor of this drill as the brass pinion gear finally stripped the last time I abused it.

The new drill has improved forward/reverse positioning and controls versus the previous model. It is a bit larger which is a bit of a negative.

I was in the middle of a wiring project when the drill gave out. Since this is a specialized tool I wasn't successful finding it at home stores. I did Buy a $250 Makita close quarters drill. I took it back. It overheated, didn't have the torque required to drill through 3 2x4's with a 3/4" auger drill and other issues.

I would strongly recommend this drill for close quarters use. I would caution users that, as with any specialty tool, this is not an all purpose drill. The sensitivity and placement of the trigger makes driving screws or other speed sensitive work difficult if not perilous.

As another reviewer noted, this drill can be very dangerous. I was changing bits the other day and while I was tightening the bit using the chuck key, the hand holding the body accidentally pressed the trigger trapping two fingers between the body and the chuck key. I could not remove my fingers. I finally had to pull the plug which released the pressure. I almost lost the tip of my finger in this accident. I will be returning this drill to Amazon today and getting the Bosch or other model with a safety trigger. I realize the instructions call for unplugging the tool while changing the bits, but honestly how many people do that with their drill?

I will say this drill has tons of power as evidenced by my chewed up fingers.

"Torque and power in a small package" 2010-04-17

Don't let the statements about power and torque mislead you. This drill is not particularly big. The accessory handle makes it larger on the y axis, but the over all drill is not that big.

The power is great, and I don't know how people use cordless drills for serious work.

One nit-picky complaint. The chuck needs to be tight; and I mean tight. I was using a 4 1/4 hole saw for nice and neat holes in the ceiling drywall for remodeling the kitchen and dining lighting. The hole saw bit slipped out after the 3rd hole. It's drywall, come on....Turns out that what I thought was secure needed more torque from the Allan key/Jacobs chuck than I realized.

My father always lends me his old Milwaukee tools from the 80's when I ask. They still work great, and its why I purchased my own.

The drills have lasted for years and have always had plenty of power and durability. This is a very powerful drill and I have no doubt that it will drill most any size hole that you have a bit for but I think that Milwaukee should have a little better quality control.

The reason I say this is that while drilling the third 3/4" I reversed the drill to clean the bit, the chuck wound off the shaft and there between the joist was a bit half way through with the chuck attached. The only to remove them was to back them out useing a pipe wrench. Upon examination I found that the left hand threaded screw that locks the chuck on the shaft was broken allowing the chuck to unwind off the shaft when the drill was reversed. For this to happen, the screw had to be loose from the factory. A quick inspection would have prevented this and I would not have lost 2 days on a job that I needed to finish by this friday. I returned the drill for a refund and purchased the standard right angle drill instead. Needless to say I am unhappy with the delay, since I am a small contractor and should be starting another job Monday instead of having to spend another day on this one.

Amazon was very helpful in returning this item.

No idea why but Milwaukee makes the 2602 in two versions and this one produces 450 in. lbs. of torque and the other produces 550 in. lbs. of torque. It may be that the smaller battery cannot provide enough juice to the drill motor to sustain more torque as the RPM is the same and the torque load should also be the same for both drills.

I bought the 450 inch pound version and having used the 650 inch pound rated 2611 I found there to be a very big difference in power. Difficult drilling operations that the 2611 could handle would stop the 2602 (450 in. lb. version) in its tracks. This also made a big difference in battery life. Boring a single very large hole with the 2611 would drain 25% of the battery charge. Drilling the same size hole in the same material with the 2602 would drain 100% of the battery charge.

For making holes under 1" diameter in wood or smaller than 3/8" in metal or drilling No. 10 screws that are 2" or shorter and this drill will perform well. But go past this to tougher jobs and the drill quickly stumbles. It is too bad that Milwaukee makes two 2602 drills with much different power ratings. With lithium-ion battery power the problem is actually more pronounced thanks to the overload protection.

We switched over to the new modern big gullet hole cutters last year and now cut holes in a fraction of the time and get many more holes per charge. The 5" size is a good test of a drill's true torque and available power that only takes a few minutes and a sawhorse and some scrap plywood or OSB. The time required to make the hole, the amount of battery charge used, and how smooth the cutting is all varies quite a lot and makes a drill's strength or weakness easy to see and measure.

The Milwaukee drill chuck is excellent as is the clutch and the charger is one of the few intuitive ones that has a red light on when a battery is charging and changes to green when it is complete. Opposite of the way the Hitachi charger works, and the DeWalt charger is also color challenged. Milwaukee makes the best tool cases and the ones for their lithium-ion powered drills are no exception. There is a place for everything that hold everything tightly.

Get the 2602-22 model with the 550 in. lb. rating or get a 2611 which is not a lot more money if you plan on heavy duty use for the drill. Lithium-ion power is both good and bad, and less bad the more powerful the drill and the larger the battery. Lighter drills are fine for light duty tasks but with lithium-ion batteries they also fad quickly when the going gets tough.

This is not a heavy duty 18 volt drill that can be used anywhere a cord drill would be used, but for general drilling and screw driving it is a very good drill and the kit is the designed of any on the market. It starts when you open the Milwaukee carry case that is very well built and has a nook for every item, nothing bounces around as with other cases, and there is even a small place to put commonly used drills and screw driving extensions. The drill has the graduations marked as part of the collar and recessed so they will never wear off and are easy to see. The clutch adjustment for screw driving is very smooth and the graduations work well for getting the right setting for whatever size screw is being used. The chuck does a good job of holding small bits but when boring where there is a lot of vibration it will loosen and need to be re-tightened (true with Makita and Hitachi chucks as well).

The half size battery cartridge keeps the weight down of the drill but it is also part of what limits the drill to light to medium duty use. Drilling a difficult hole in a tough material like MDF will quickly deplete the battery charge in just a few holes. The half size battery provides half the power for half as long as a full size battery on a drill like the Milwaukee 2611 (which I also own and use).

Hammer action is good and will get the job done for holes in concrete within its rated size range but the drill does not come with a side handle or a way to attach one later and Milwaukee does not make side handles that hold a depth rod. Again this is a drill designed for DIY projects the average homeowner is likely to take on.

Having a LED light is a big plus and it is odd that all drills made today do not include this as a standard item, cord and cordless alike. It not only helps to spot the area to be drilled or a screw head but can be used to check a measurement or a level when the lighting is not great, as in an attic or crawspace or in a closet or cupboard.

The charger works well and is easy to figure out - red when charging and green when it is done. Why all the drill manufacturers cannot make it this simple is something I cannot understand. Milwaukee has a cord that can accept another plug so one outlet can be used for the charger and can still be used for another tool.

For most purposes this kit is all anyone will ever need and the lithium-ion batteries will provide many recharge cycles and they hold a charge for a very long time. When you use a drill infrequently it is great to not have to recharge the battery first every time. This is the real advantage to lithium-ion batteries and makes up for the problems with the overload protection that restricts their ability to power drills.

Truly a class act all the way. But if you do want a drill to put in a new deck or similar projects you will be happier with drills like the Milwaukee 2611 or the DeWalt DCD970 which are in another performance class altogether.

I recently purchased the Milwaukee M18 Hammer/Drill/Driver mainly because of the Brand integrity but also because I was tired of carrying many extra batteries that ran out of juice too soon. This one surprised me, completely. I'm more of a weekend project warrior and this one completed many tasks that I normally would use my old Black & Decker in combination with an electric drill. I actually used this drill for 3 days before I broke out the second battery for the first time. And the available power and torque is amazing, far surpassing the capabilities of even my electric drill. One should note that two hands should be used when you know it will be a tough job because the torque of this lightweight monster could put a serious hurt on your wrist. Now I'm looking to replace ALL my cordless tools with the M18 Family. The M18 6.5 inch circular saw is next on my list. Yeah, they cost more than most of your average tools, but the benefits far outweigh and are totally worth it.

Don't buy them if your primary use is with a drill/driver, they are hardened to take the pounding that impact drivers/wrenches give them. This is an awesome drill...with the quality assurance Milwaukee is famous for. Sure, some of the complaints may be legitimate, however, they do not detract from the performance and quality of this drill. The 28 volt, lithium ion battery lasts for hours of good use, and is quick to recharge. The keyless chuck is amazingly tight, even with the smallest drill bits, and very quick/easy to change between bits.

I will not go into all the details and finer points of this drill. The 5-year warranty, and other good reviews speak for itself. I also bought the work light that uses the same battery, (MLW49-24-0185 V28), and it is the most amazing light I have found. Just read the many great reviews for it.

I'm a commercial electrician and use this drill daily. Sometime for hours at a time. It has a ton of power. So much in fact it will darn near break your wrist if what you are drilling catches the bit and turns the drill when you least expect it. I'm constantly using large bore step bits to drill into steel j-boxes, door frames, etc. It's perfect. I have 3 other cordless drills and they stay at home. This is the only one I take to the job site with me every day. I'm so hard on this thing. I use it and use it hard. I have no clue what Consumer Reports could have possibly done to break it. I've used it so hard the drill body was too hot to rest your palm on and it didn't even smell. I've dropped it off a 10 foot step ladder onto concrete, picked it back up and used it the rest of the day. I've owned it 8 months and have put it through more than most people will in a lifetime and it's still going strong. I can't say enough about how extremely durable it is.

On the hammer setting it will drill 1/4" holes in block but that's about it, so don't expect much from the hammer setting if you have anything heavy-duty to drill. I use the Milwaukee 28v cordless SDS hammer drill for 99% of my hammer drilling anyway. (that drill is a superb hammer drill BTW)

As far as the other reviewers rating the drill down, READ THE PRODUCT DESCRIPTION!. Under the caption "What's in the box", it says one hammer drill! That's it! READ next time you fools!

I purchased the "bare tool" because I have some v28 batteries, I like them because they stay charged on the shelf (within reason). This drill broke in Consumer Reports testing of hammer drills. Also, it is made in China. Performed very well in drilling concrete block for anchors. The side handle is the best yet of Bosch, DeWalt, Makita that I own. It is easily adjustable and stays put. UPDATE: 11/09 Recently had a conversation with a sales person at H.D. orange store. He said that they (H.D) are no longer pushing the 28v Millwaukee stuff due to the many failures in this line of tools. Basically because Millwaukee is using 28 volts on 18 volts guts.

I like that it has a high speed for drilling, but it will not drive any screws of #10 x 1 1/2" or larger with any authority whatsoever even on the slow-speed, high torque setting. Not a replacement for your larger, conventional battery drill. Not even close.

I too purchased this 28v hammer drill/driver as part of Milwaukee's four piece kit. I'm a DIY guy, not a contractor. I own a big 100 year old place. I've built a 6' fence, and am working on a playhouse / storage shed. I am building with rough cut birch from a saw mill that went out of business years ago. Between the 100 year old fir and this well seasoned birch my smaller drills lacked the torque to sink screws consistently.

Since I purchased this 28v drill, I have yet to meet it's match. It has never failed. I'm a big guy so the weight of this drill is not an issue. When going to a smaller drill, the smaller drill does feel very light after using this one. Having this drill has increased my productivity tremedously on these jobs that require the 600#'s of torque. It's nice to know the torque is there when needed.

The two batteries are plenty to keep you going as long a day as you are up to working. We live so far north that we have summer days with sunlight from 3:30am to 10:30pm. "Rome wasn't built in a day, but you can move a lot of cement in a day". You can get a lot done in a day with this tool. Yes, I love it.

I use this drill everyday, and i can tell you its a powerful drill. I bought this drill approximately one month ago and since that day have had the trigger sticking on a daily basis and have had the chuck screw fallout numerous times. I have been lucky enough to find it when it fallsout nearly evertime and i just put it back in. My supervisor owns the same drill and had to send his in for repair for the same problem but when his fell out so did the chuck and the chuck then broke.Well now i have lost the screw this time and decided that this is enough. Brought it back to the store i bought it from for an even exchange. Hope this drill changes my mind but as far as im concerned this drill is a safety hazard and its not just an isolated incident. Dont buy this drill if you want to keep your fingers and dont wanna waste the 400$ this high priced finger hazard of machine will cost you. BUY A DEWALT

I reviewed the regular 18 volt by mistake so I copied the review and pasted it here. I had used Dewalt when I worked with the Teamsters years back, it was a good gun but it can not compare to this machine. The gun I had was the model with the hammer drill setting I used this gun for work, drilling into 1/4 steal colums as well as concrete on a daily basis and work it did. The torque this thing has is incredible, close to a corded gun, well not the ones we had, they'd snap your wrist if you weren't careful, but this has torque, 2x stronger than Dewalt in my book if not more. The veratility this gun has was a great advantage not to mention the life in its battery pack. If you charge it correctly to start these guns hold power, light work a battery could get you through a 10 hour day, heavy work, like hammer drill mode you would need 2 in a 10 hour day, which is great, guys with dewalts usually had 4 batteries and 2 chargers cause they needed it. I would of given this thing a 5 out of 5 but I blew the clutch after a year of hard abuse. Its not easy for any cordless gun to drill into concrete, even if they say they have hammer drill capabilities. That's why I gave it a 4 out of 5, the boss ended up replacing it with a refurbished model, worked just as good, he never sent the damaged one in for repair though always wondered why. If I had the money right now I would buy this gun, no questions asked. My 12 year old Dewalt I have at home has seen better days.

I liked everything about this extension... the size, the feel, the look, the functionality. It's very handy for increasing my drill's range and usability in tight spaces. However, while working on a cabinet project in my kitchen, the extension simply slipped out of my quick-change bit adapter that is semi-permanently installed on my power drill. The extension then proceeded to fall (in painful, slow motion), hit my granite countertop, and chip a small piece out of it. Am I totally sure that it was the extension's fault? Not totally (I'll answer my own question), but in the 10 years I've used the quick-change adapter, I've never had a single bit fall out. And by now, I'm pretty good at putting bits in and feeling how secure they are. But, now there's a chip in my counter, so someone's got to pay! And they'll pay in stars! Sorry Milwaulkee! I have used this tool to extend the reach of my impact drivers into areas that were to confined for the actual tool to reach. It was most useful while replacing windows in my house. The new vinyl replacement windows came with screws that needed to be placed inside the frames at the corners very close to the glass. Without an extension the diameter of the impact drivers and the short reach of the bits created an excessive entry angle for the screws. Using this extension allowed me to reduce the entry angle a significant amount without having to resort to more expensive options such as right angle drives or flex drives.

"One Awesome Drill..." 2009-11-29

As long as you can hold on to it, this drill has enough torque to drill through almost anything...and if it can't, you should be using a hammer drill. Or dynamite. If you're drilling wimpy little holes in wood, this isn't the drill to use. At 850 rpm, it runs too slow. But if you have to drill 1/2" holes in railroad ties, swing a 3" hole saw, punch a hole through a steel plate, or drill a hole in a concrete block, this'll do the job.

The 0302-20 has been pretty well covered by other reviewers, but to fill in a couple of things that haven't mentioned...

- Power cords are available in both 8' and 25' lengths. The drill comes with the standard 8' version, but I find myself usually using the 25' one. Milwaukee 48-76-4025 Quik-Lok 25-Foot 3 Wire Grounded Cord

- If pushed back all the way, the side handle fits over some bumps molded onto the nosepiece. This effectively locks it in place. The bumps allow the side handle to be seated at 30 degree angles (30, 60, 90,120, 150, 180...) relative to the trigger. If it's not pushed all the way back, you can tighten it down at any angle. Unlike my DeWalt 115-DW236K: 1/2 Inch Heavy-Duty VSR, the chuck is smaller than the nosepiece (by 0.04", but that's enough...) so you can't easily clamp the chunk to the drill body by tightening down the handle when it's too far forward. (...although who would do anything that dumb?)

In any case, I highly recommend this drill. Although I wish Milwaukee had included a case, and not sold it separately (Milwaukee 48-55-0711 General Purpose Carrying Case for Pistol Grip Tools), it still warrants a solid five stars.

This is a great tool for the money. Bought for cabinet shop. Had to drill 60 4 1/8" holes in 3/4" melamine. Flawless performance. Huge power. Slick handle and cord operation. Keyless chuck is worth the money. It works perfectly and saves the multiple trips around the shop looking for that dang chuck key. Plus it is fast change out. Bought reconditioned and like the fact that every reconditioned tool gets the once over. Can tell it was lightly used but no biggie. It is the best corded 1/2" drill for the money. If it holds up as well as my other Milwaukee drills (and I have no reason to believe it wont), it will live a long hard life.

I bought this drill to use with a 2.75" x 26" Bulb/Plant Auger and a 4.75" x 26" Planting Auger, both of which I purchased from Gempler's. The keyless chuck makes it easy to exchange these augers and holds them in securely. This is a powerful drill which makes using these augers a snap for drilling holes in the ground. But you do have to hold on securely. If you hit a rock or tree root, the drill will catch and spin your wrist around if you are not careful. I also bought two 50 foot, 12-gauge three-wire, grounded extension cords for work farther out in my backyard, and the drill works fine. I'm buying a lot more plants for my rock garden and butterfly garden because planting is so much easier now. Great Product!

I have had this model for over a year now and am ordering another for a gift to my electrician friend. I was amused by some of the reviews - Joe's in particular. This is a great drill. I used (abused) the predecessor with keyed chuck for over 20 years before replacing it with this model last year. Joe - the cord is wonderful the way it is. It disconnects for easier replacement. Over the 20+ years I replaced the cord on the last one twice. The handle (sissy bar) sticks out that far for added leverage. Put a 4" hole saw on this baby and it has enough torque to break your arm. Since I am a contractor I use a hole hawg for mixing drywall mud and heavy stuff. I use my three cordlesses for most light drilling and srewdriving. I use a SDS hammerdrill for concrete. However - I have used these magnums for all of the above when it was more expedient or the more proper tool was not close by. This thing can do it all, do it well and do it quickly. It's relatively small size might be misleading. I recommend the proper drill for your job at hand as mentioned above but I cannot imagine a better all-round tool for a homeowner who does not have all the drills I do. Joe - don't badmouth a great tool because you do not know how to use it's design features.

I initally bought two set of tools and gave one set to my dad for Christmas. Upon setting up he had the bolt that sets the circular saw blade break off in the saw. I contacted Amazon and would you believe had set to me within 3 working days. They gave me 30 days to get the broken one back, but got us a new set that fast. WOW! They also provided a packing label for UPS or FEDEX (I can't remember) so we didn't have to pay chipping for the new set or the broken set to get back to AMAZON.

I received the tools on a Thursday and was excited about them as I usually am when I get new tools. Put the battery on the charger figured after 30 minutes I could see how they worked. Since that's what I have seen with all of the other Li-ion battery tools. After 30 minutes nothing happened no power tried the flashlight the drill and the saw in case it was the particular tool. Then I ran to town to grab some dinner. Tried the other battery when I got back nothing happened again. Well I gave it one last shot let one of the batteries charge overnight. Again this morning nothing happened. I have had milwaukee stuff before and liked it very much. But this set is the biggest joke I have ever ordered and they are going back.

I like this tool a great deal, but it only gets used when I can't use its bigger brother, the Milwaukee 49-22-8510 Right Angle Drill Attachment Kit

The offset head is significantly cheaper than the Milwaukee right angle head and it really shows. The right angle head is a finely designed and machined tool, whereas this tool doesn't have that refinement. The right angle flange is especially problematic because it is not attached to the offset head by any means other than friction. So, you have to fool around with it a lot, having it fall off when you pick up the tool or simply fall down onto the drill or screwdriver chuck. It always seems to fall off at the most inconvenient times and then magically find its way under the biggest pile of the heaviest material in the area. I suppose that if you used the tool enough, you'd get used to handling it just right, to minimize that issue, but for me, it's enough to cause me to always reach for the Milwaukee right angle tool first. I'm glad that I have the off-set head, because it is certainly useful at times, but I do wish that Milwaukee would upgrade the unit so that the thumb flange wasn't a hassle. If/when they do that, I'll buy another.

This must be a really tough tool to engineer for indestructability. Lots of re-directed torque-you can imagine the stress on the gears. I usually trust Milwaukee for tools that can take a licking and keep on ticking, but this definitely isn't one of them. The tool doesn't last for more than a couple of stressful applications before the gears strip. Nobody else makes anything that can get in and out of tighter spots though, and it has become a necessary part of my tool box. I have found that Home Depot will take these back for exchange when give out, if you save the packaging and tell them the tool is defective (which is no lie). Without the packaging they have to go back to the manufacturer, which is a p.i.t.a. and takes time.

This is the 3rd battery I've purchased from Amazon. They do the job well enough but they don't last as long as I would like. Like all NiCads they self discharge over several weeks but I expected that they would not die in under 5 years. Instead, they all seem to go after 3 years. I'd be really unhappy if I was paying $30 each (full price). I'd love to be able to upgrade to NiMh or Lithium but I can't find them here.

I got these in Dec. 2009 as a gift. I was excited to try them out, but was surprised that they really did not perform better than ordinary bits, at least in wood. Then the other day, I was drilling in MDF and the second smallest bit broke off in the MDF. Can you imagine...in MDF. That might have been the first use for that size bit. I was expecting much better quality for the price and Brand. I have several Milwaukee tools, specifically nail guns, and they are of very high quality.

The specs for the drill can be found a number of places. My own personal experiences are as follows:

I am just beginning to get into cabinet making as a hobby. My current project involves about 1 doz drawers mounted on glides in very tight openings. I knew that my big drill/driver and my smaller drivers would not fit so I considered the following right angle drills:

Dewalt 18v

Bosch 12v

Milwaukee 12v

I decided to buy the Milwaukee based on a number of things:

Size (it is fairly consistent in its size with no large areas to work around)

Balance (the battery balances out the head nicely providing greater control)

Power (power enough to remove 3" screws in hardwood)

Worklight (no need for a third hand installing shelf rails)

The Milwaukee balances quite nicely in the hand and does not have areas that are larger than the actual working portion of the device - unlike the Dewalt and it is rather slim overall - unlike the Bosch. This is especially noticable when working in tight areas. As a result it becomes more like a natural extension of your hand than that of a foriegn object.

I also like the variable speed trigger control and the built-in work light is perfect for placing screws in those dark corners of cabinets.

Some may complain that it only comes with one battery or the case is a soft zippered case instead of a hard case. Valid points- however consider that this Milwaukee is not meant to replace your primary drill that takes a beating and keeps on ticking, but rather to augment it like a fine precision tool for the times when beauty is needed over brawn. The battey issue was not a problem as I never used up the battery when installing the rails. Besides a complety dead battery charges in about 30 minutes and it is a L-ION type so between use refreshes are quite easiliy done with no detimental effect on the battery. A second battery can be stored in the case and the case itself is quite suitable for it purpose and how the tool will be used.

As to power - I recently had to remove some 3" screws that were set in Oak with a corded right angle drill. The Milwaukee had no problem removing them. The clutch worked great and the work light made the process a lot safer.

I am more than pleased with the tool and I am sure that I will create new projects that will allow me to take full advantage of this tools special capabilities.

Ok this is a very good tool. Milwaukee is very late to the small lithium market but they do appear to have done their homework. I really like the M12 line of Milwaukee tools.

I will focus my review by comparing the M12 to it's main competitor the Bosch PS10-2A both are meant to be lighter duty cordless right angle drill/drivers for tight jobs like installing under cabinet lighting or drawer handles. They are not meant for removing 3/8 lag bolts or other heavy construction needs.

The head length on the M12 is about the same as the Bosch, ok actually it is 1/4 inch longer but it has a ratcheting chuck so it can take drill bits of all kinds without the need for an adapter. the Bosh has a hex speed chuck so you have to use hex drill bits or an adapter which effectively increases the head length well beyond the M12. Both have extended paddle grips, and the grips are both on the chunky side. My in the hand opinion is the M12 feels just a bit thinner and easier to grab. Speed control is much better on the M12 the trigger is very linear and easy to control. The Bosch is very poor in this regard, more of an on/off experience. The Bosch is slightly shorter in overall tool length. I did not measure it but about an inch when configured for rt angle use. Both tools use an electronic clutch and both are awful!!! the lowest setting will still spin out of a philips head when in a tight corner. Mechanical clutch would add weight and some bulk so it is a compromise. the M12 has more torque (100 vs 80) and a higher no load rpm (800 vs 600)

Now for the real kickers. The M12 has a spindle lock! Now why do you care? It allows you to use the tool as a "wrench" to finish tightening a screw or bolt by hand! the is very handy and allows for some muscle or finesse that you can not get with the Bosch. The M12 comes in a very nice case with a charger and feels very solid in the hand. Excellent tool.

So why why only 4 stars.. well two things the electronic clutch and the main reason... only comes with one battery! It is already a bit pricier then the Bosch (about $10 as of this writing) but the Bosch comes with 2 batteries. A spare M12 battery is about $40 so this is no small matter. I love this tool, I can forgive the clutch, but the lack of a second battery in what is suppose to be a pro tool is beyond cheap.

I purchased this saw along with a 12-pack set of Milwaukee blades. I have no problem cutting through drywall, screws, pvc, wood, anything that needs cutting. The threaded end is also nice, you can screw in a standard broom handle and get a servicable pole saw to add some reach. Plus whenever I spring for the reciprocating saw I'll be able to use the same blades which is nice. I think its a perfect product for what it does.

I've been using the Milwaukee 48-08-0401 Quik-Lok Job Saw for several months now around my new house for a variety of purposes. Chief amongst those has been cutting holes in old lath and horse hair plaster walls. With the narrow point of the included blade, I can saw holes with only a couple of small pre-drilled pilot holes and minimize the damaging to the surrounding plaster.

What makes the saw excel, however, is the versatility. Changing the blade is simple, quick, and never compromises the sturdy feel. I purchased this saw with the blade kit (Milwaukee 49-22-1129 12-Piece Ultimate Demolition Sawzall Blade Set) and I have used it to make easy and controlled cuts through, wood, metal, plaster, dry wall, rigid foam, etc. I have also since purchased the Milwaukee Sawzall which can utilize the same variety of blades, increasing the value.

The other day after a snow storm, I had to perform some emergency pruning on a tree with branches leaning against my neighbors house and blocking the drive way. I remembered the threads on the end of this job saw and attached it to an old paint roller handle. Changed the blade to a long wood cutting blade, and was able to easily prune the small/medium sized branches in the tree. Perfect example of this tool's ease of use and versatility. Never thought I'd need it for that purpose, but there you go....5 stars.

It is a great handy tool that I am very pleased with. I have bought many other cheaper job saws that didn't hold up or last through the job I was doing. The blades are a little on the high side to replace but it evens out money wise in the end because the blades last so much longer and much more durable then the cheaper ones so I don't have to keep buying more blades job after job. I also like that I can use the different blades from my Milwaukee sawzal on the jab saw and vice versa. I highly recommend this product and company.

Nearly bought a new lithium ion drill-driver/flashlight kit but saved about $180 to rejuvinate what I thought was a hopeless situation. 10 year old Milwaukee 3/8" drill-driver works as well as when new...even better with the 2.4 Amp battery. Originals died because I let run on flashlight until dead thinking I was 'exersising' it for longevity...but learning too late that method will ruin the battery. I have used occasionaly for 11 years, and hated to part with excellently performing drill and good flashlight. I purchase this battery as a last resort; charges on the original charger and seems to last 4x longer than the original battery (1.8 Ah). Pricey but worth it!

But they both stopped holding a charge after less than two years. When they're new the drill works great.

When my imported drill died, I remembered the excellent Milwaukee hole shooter I used to use at a job long ago. I remembered the excellent service I've got out of a USA made Milwaukee circular saw and USA made Milwaukee Sawzall. My local big box store didn't carry the Milwaukee drill I thought I wanted, so I ordered it from Amazon thinking that I was going to get another fine product from Milwaukee. Well, right beside the line that says Milwaukee Brookfield IL is a line that says Made in China. I'm not at all happy that this renowned professional tool supplier has chosen to outsource product. It would be one thing if they were offering a lower cost line that was outsourced, but this 1/2" drill cost significantly more than the similar competition, and I bought it specifically believing that it was a quality USA made product. It's an import with a plastic housing not terribly dissimilar from other more obvious imported drills offering more features at lower prices available locally.

That said, it does seem to be well made and has already proved capable of easily running a 2 1/2" hole saw, a 3/4" ship's auger bit, and a 1 1/4" wood boring bit all through 2"x4"s and 2"x6"s, as well as plywood. It's also run a 1/2" metal bit through 1/4" mild steel without a hitch (though that did take awhile). Overall, I like the drill, but I wish that a company named after an American city, who built their reputation on American union labor wouldn't outsource to countries where their external costs are completely hidden or would at least be honest enough to put that in bold print on the external advertising. For me, this is the last Milwaukee anything, since even though I like the products, I don't trust the company any more. That's indicative of just how far we've fallen as a country, if even the brands named for our cities aren't made here anymore. Good buy Milwaukee. You were once a fine brand.

A heavy duty long lasting wonder drill! Oh, it is heavy too.

My old friend has had this model drill for 20 years. google it, you'll find pros who have 20+ year old versions of this drill.

The only downside is that it is now made in China instead of Mexico and before that it was made in the USA; you'll see the cost is lower now than it was long ago as a result. I don't know if quality has suffered, it seems fine to me.

Yes, the case is difficult to manipulate, but for $4, take it out of the crappy case and store it in one of your other Milwaukee, Dewalt, or Craftsman for that matter, half empty bit cases kicking around your tool bag or garage!!! $4 for all these bits is a no brainer.

The bits get stuck in "roof" of the case and are nearly impossible to retrieve. The case doesn't come apart. Bits aren't long enough to use without the quick change adapter. The adapter is several inches long. Disappointing product. I was tyring to save a few bucks by buying this instead of Makita. My mistake.

Batteries are as good as they make. I own several cordless tools and found the milwaukee to me the easiest on batteries. Dewalt seems to last on a average of 6 to 8 months, where Milwaukee seems to last nearly 18 months before needing replacement. I use mine alot so your results may very. The new Ion technology is promsing and I hope in the next 5 years to see batteries that will last extend periods of time without quiting

After delighting in my decision to buy a big Milwaukee hammer drill recently, I decided to buy one of these for my wife to use with her property management company - it is light and small enough to literaly fit in her purse. Of course, I have used it exclusively since!

I just got back from a job screwing dozens of 2 1/2" #12 screws through mutliple boards. This little thing handled the job without a hick-up. The power enclosed in the tiny, egg-sized batteries is phenomenal. And, as with the bigger tool, the spacious case is a delight for holding all sorts of extra stuff. Bravo to Milwaukee for all the little touches that make these drills a joy to use.

I own 3/8 and 1/2 inch dewalt drills which are corded, and use them for heavy duty projects on a regular basis. There is no substitute for plugging into a wall outlet when it comes to power, and they will last forever, but I needed a light, compact, cordless drill for small jobs and for portability. This drill fits the job description perfectly. It works so well, my corded drills may not see much use anymore, as it performs 90% of the tasks my "powerhouse" drills can do. It has its limitations, in terms of power and charge capacity, but really, most non-professional users will not begin to tax the limits of this drill. It's really a great tool, and shows how far cordless tools have come. I have no complaints and no suggestions for improvements. Great drill!

This is one of the best cordless drills I have owned. This drill replaces my dewalt 18v ,which was getting to heavy and awkward for small jobs. This drill will be able to do both small and large jobs with the power it has. It is solidly built and made to last. The light on the drill comes in handy when working in cabinets or closets. I like the battery meter on the side of the drill to keep track of usage. I would recomend this drill for anyone looking for a powerful but lightweight cordless drill.

This little wonder is a great jobsite drill/driver. It's small and light enough to fit in a tool-belt bag. The battery has enough charge so that the two it comes with last the whole day, with plenty left over. It has plenty of power for most home-building jobs short of driving lag bolts, and the little headlight is great for setting screws in dark recesses.

My only complaint is that the various manufacturers of similar tools didn't standardize their battery packs, so pick the brand that has the right combination of other tools for the work you do.

We use a lot of drills and periodically switch to new models when we believe (and validate through our testing) that a new model may provide better performance on the job site. We used to go through a lot of NiCad battery packs during the year and would regularly send off the Milwaukee's in particular off to get rebuilt by a company that specializes in battery rebuilds. With the switch to lithium-ion we first bought Makita drills because they were the first to start offering them.

With the Makita drills we found that parts were often left out of kits and had to be special ordered like bit holders and belt clips, the case designs were sturdy even if a bit crude, the clutches were average (neither great nor bad) and the drills themselves were very light even though a bit underpowered compared to the 18 volt NiCad battery powered Milwaukee drills we had been using.

We have supplied our guys with both the Milwaukee 2601 drills and the Milwaukee 2611 hammer drills. Overall the 2601 is great for what we need it to do - i.e. light to medium duty jobs where we like its light weight and excellent design. Milwaukee has without a doubt the best drill chuck for general use and the smoothest clutch action. The half size lithium-ion batteries charge in more time than the Makita but we have been replacing them with the full size batteries which take about the same amount of time to charge.

The RPM ranges are better than most and the high speed range works well even when drilling through steel which in the past was when we would get out a cord drill. For high torque applications the lack of a side handle makes the drill difficult to control as is the case with all such drills. The new Milwaukee drills with side handles are designed to have to be attached at a 90 degree angle (same new feature or defect is found with the new Ridgid drills) which is a lot less useful than the ones that can be set at any angle as on the DeWalt, Makita, and Bosch drills we have used.

The charger has lights that indicate the charge state of the battery and is a little confusing at first. Why every manufacturer has their own thoughts about how to indicate a battery is charging or fully charged is beyond me. Some have a red light that flashes to indicate the battery is charging, others to indicate it has fully charged, and others to indicate that the battery has a defect. A nice feature on the Milwaukee charger is a plug end that accepts another plug so you can have the charger plugged into an extension cord or outlet and still plug in something else at the same time. There is also room in the case to have the power cord for the charger sitting underneath it in the case.

Being able to tell the approximate charge level of the battery by pressing a raised area on the battery is handy and likely to help prolong the battery life if you don't keep recharging batteries that do not really need a recharge. I have read different manufacturer's recommendations with regard to recharging their batteries but the consensus seems to be that it is best to bring the battery to full charge before storing it away until the next use.

When I bought our first drill with an LED light it seemed like a trivial feature. Now I would be hard pressed to buy a drill without one. So much nicer to be in a crawlspace or in an attic or just working at dusk and be able to see what you are doing without having to use a headlight or have a flashlight in your mouth. The Milwaukee 2601 LED has a very broad which is an additional refinement that you may never notice or find very useful, but it is there if you need it and further evidence of the thought Milwaukee's product engineers put into the drill.

These are some of the details that manufacturers continue to leave out of the manuals and don't even bother to provide on their websites as downloadable PDF files. Instead we get the very spartan bits of information in 3 or 4 languages. I have yet to find recommended RPM ranges that are truly useful from any of the drill companies. They all recommend high speed for drilling small holes and low speed for large holes as though that really covers it. Even the clutch setting are a trial and error process which seems unnecessary. Does a setting of 10 provide twice the slippage of a 20 setting - who knows and is willing to tell.

The kit case is the best thought out design of any on the market and far better than the ones from Makita and DeWalt and Hitachi. Why you can spend $200-400 on a kit and get a lousy case is another peeve of mine. With the Milwaukee case design everything has an obvious home and even if the case bounces around in the back of the truck everything inside is protected. There is even a fair amount of room for spare bits or a countersink set.

I liked that the drill came with a good belt clip and bit holder. First time I have bought a kit where everything that showed on the side of the packaging was actually included with the kit. Usually the clips and belt holders are left off and I have to decide whether it is worth spending another $30 to special order the parts from Makita or Milwaukee. It is also a good belt clip and not like the one that Hitachi design that I never used.

Drill power is good for a drill of this size and weight and so long as you use modern bits and hole cutters with it you will be happy with its performance. I have used the drill to quickly cut 6-1/4" holes in Advantech and plywood subflooring and although it is not the best drill for this particular job it shows what can be done with the right hole cutter (in this case a Blue Boar TCT though even the Big Hawgs make a big difference in performance).

I have used this drill to make 4" holes through stucco and OSB sheathing in less than a minute using a special TCT Stucco bit which again shows that the proper hole cutter is important for good performance with cordless drills. Lots of people I know show up at a job site with a half dozen spare batteries when all they really need to do ins invest in some modern hole cutters and high performance drills. Toss your bi-metal holes saws or relegate them for use only on steel panel and you will be a lot happier with the performance of whatever cordless drill you have now or end up buying in the future. Had we realized the performance difference we would have stayed with our NiCad drills a lot longer.

With Lithium-ion drills there is a safety circuit that is designed to cut power to the drill motor and LED in high draw situations to keep the battery from overheating. The downside is that drill times can easily double especially when the wrong torque range or speed setting is used or you start cutting too fast and forcing the bit or hole cutter into the work piece. Good technique that is adjusted for the particular drill is important with brute force providing poor results that are more the fault of the worker than the drill.

Just be aware that the drill manufacturers have not agreed on a standard testing procedure much less one that would accurately reflect real world use of their cordless drills. It is even more of a joke with the lithium-ion drills where the ratings don't reflect the real power output that can be obtained before the overload protection cuts power to the drill motor. With the Hitachi and Makita drills the drilling time is often double that of other powers in their class and I have little doubt that the problem is due to their overly conservative lithium-ion overload settings.

So far the chucks on our drills have been holding up very well and runout does not seem to be a problem. With the older Milwaukees drill runout was above average and not in the same class as the Bosch drills. Time will tell if the Milwaukee chucks hold up better but if you want the ultimate in smoothness for precision drilling the Bosch drills are worth considering even with their 2-speed gear box limitation (shared by the Milwaukee drills.

The biggest limitations of this drill are the lack of a 3rd speed range and the lack of a side handle, both of which together limit the kinds of jobs you can take on with this drill. But for light to medium tasks the light weight and refinement of the Milwaukee 2601 drills makes them the ones I tend to reach for first. The lightweight Makita drills are very good but the new Milwaukee 2601 drills are just plain better in every way.

With corded drills one had the 3/8" light to medium duty drills and the 1/2" reduced speed high torque wrist breakers to choose from. Now with lithium-ion cordless drills you can often do jobs that in the past meant hauling out the 1/2" stud drill and a 100 foot extension cord so long as you match the drill and the cutters and bits to the job. And don't expect one drill to be both super powerful and lightweight and compact. No free lunch as they say and there are always trade offs with any choice.

For light to medium duty tasks the Milwaukee is better than any other driver drill we have owned, and that includes 18 volt lithium-ion powered ones from Makita, DeWalt, Hitachi, Bosch, and Ridgid. For heavy duty tasks we always reach for the somewhat less sophisticated but amazingly powerful DeWalt DCD970 with its 3-speed gear box and the fastest charging lithium-ion batteries available today.

The good news is that even the worst lithium-ion powered drills are better than their NiCad predecessors in holding a charge for months at a time and providing excellent run times so long as they are not overloaded. The new lithium-ion batteries are likely to last through at least 4 times as many recharge cycles and last years longer than the NiCad battery packs and without the memory problems that often disabled NiCads, and in particular those from Milwaukee. Just save some dollars for new hole cutters and modern drill bits (like the Blue Boar TCT high performance hole cutters, Milwaukee's Big Hawg cutters, and new Bosch Rapid Feed spade bits).

Hard to appreciate but I have cut 2" holes in 7/8" MDF with a brand new Lenox bi-metal carbide tipped hole saw and it took more than 40 seconds to cut the hole, another couple minutes to knock out the piece of MDF, and 30 plus minutes to get the Milwaukee battery back to a full charge level. With a Blue Boar TCT hole cutter the same size I made multiple holes in the same piece of MDF and each hole took 4 seconds, the cut pieces of MDF just fell out onto the ground so I could start cutting the next hole and I ran out of MDF long before the battery ran out of power. I saw some great video clips on the Hole Pro website showing similar results but I like to do my own testing even if the outcome is the same.

Let me start off by saying that this would be a very good drill if the batteries weren't so terrible. I received this drill from my boss as a replacement after my 18 volt 1.5A lithium-ion Makita drill (which I owned for approximately 1.5 years) got stolen at a job site. In this review I will be comparing the two drills. I am a carpenter and I use my drills everyday to install kitchen cabinets and various other projects. This drill is a little heavier and shorter than the Makita. The storage case for this drill is very nice and sturdy. The Makita case feels a little flimsy but it hasn't fallen apart on me during the 1.5 years that I owned the drill. One nice feature about the Milwaukee drill is that it comes with a belt hook and bit storage holder. With the Makita you have to buy those separately on ebay or from Makita parts center. This is a minor thing but it's worth mentioning. I liked how on the Makita drill the light stays on for about 6 seconds after releasing the trigger. On the Milwaukee the light goes off as soon as you let go of the trigger. Now onto the most important part, battery life. The batteries on this drill aren't even in the same league as the Makita batteries. The Makita batteries last about twice as long and provide much more power and torque to the drill. The Makita drill comes with a 15 minute charger while this Milwaukee drill comes with a 30 minute charger. In my opinion the Makita 18 volt drill is hands down the best drill in it's class on the market. I also highly recommend the new Bosch 18v lithium ion drill. My co-worker owns one and I had a chance to use it a few times and was very impressed, but I still prefer Makita by a slight margin. The Makita drill is a little more expensive but you get what you pay for. If you are a homeowner that has a few small projects every now and then, then the Milwaukee drill might be ok for you but for someone that uses their drill everyday I would consider spending the extra money for the Makita drill. I know I will.

I bought one without thought of where it was made because like most of us assumed a Milwaukee would be American made. As above, it's a great drill, but how many more years will we be able to buy these, if there is no longer any American industry. I'm as guilty as anybody, but we are going to have to start insisting on American made consumer choices if we are to reconstruct our economy. We have nearly completely exported or economy and our tax base. When the government wants more taxes where will we get the money since corporations have moved both their manufacturing and bookkeeping offshore?

Bought this one after some research and price comparisons. Have used the drill for one big project so far, worked great. Has plenty of power, I like the variable clutch, high and low speed ranges plus variable speed, the clutch is super easy to add or remove bits, the batteries charge in about twenty minutes and the charger has a built-in light display to show charge status as you recharge. Also pretty light weight for the power it puts out. Only negative would be it's a little loud if you're holding right at ear-level, but not enough to make me stop working or put on earplugs.

I got mine as a "throw in" with a trade show purchase. In building custom cabinets, I use it constantly. It has proven very durable (if you don't try to blast large holes in framing members with it) and the only complaint with mine is that it exhibits a little more run-out at the point of the bit than it should. I contacted Milwaukee and admonished them for producing such a fine tool only to lack the precision it deserves. Even sent it to them for their observations and response. I got the "shoulder shrug" response and the "well to be competitive, we had to go to China to produce it". Well, at last check Jacobs was still able to make a quality competitive product right here in the good old USA. Haven't seen a right angle attachment by Jacobs, or that would be the one to have.

This is a very beautifully made tool (Made in Germany) which is extremely effective at doing the job. My corded hammer drill is going to get a lot less use now. This is one incredible tool. Mine came with a adjustable stop rod that is not shown in the picture. It is built into the side handle and requires no tools to adjust its length, just press on the spring loaded release and adjust the rod to the desired position or remove it if it is in the way. I use this tool to replace a much heavier corded model for doing overhead work. I am installing new drywall in a very old house that had plaster over plaster board wall construction. I have removed the plaster and plaster board on the exterior walls to facilitate the installation of insulation and modern wiring. The underlying structure wasn't exactly designed for drywall. For instance the top plates were not aligned. The top 2x4 plate protruded into the room ½ to ¾ of an inch in some areas making it impossible to install the drywall with a square corner. I used a sharpened flat chisel blade and the hammer mode to quickly cut off the excess material using the lower top plate as a guide. Other than a flush cutting circular saw I can't think of a tool that would have done this job any better, and it is probably safer than using a flush cutting circular saw overhead.

I love this tool. It is strong and compact. It uses my old ni-cad 18 volt batteries as well as my new V-18 Lithium batteries. I bought mine from Tool King at a compettive price and it arrived in the original Milwaukee "bare tool" box along with the product registration paperwork.

One vendor shipped the last tool Milwaukee tool I bought from them in a plain brown box, no Milwaukee packaging and didn't include the operational part of the tool (the metal cutting blade) even though the product description stated it was included, and when I asked them to send it they just said no, ship it back at my expense if I wasn't happy and pay the restocking fee. The entire process set my building project back several weeks. You can read my review of the Milwaukee metal cutting circular saws to get the full story (and be sure to look at the pictures), Amazon did compensate me some of my cost of returning the item but not all of it. Perhaps your results may be better but it has been my experience that some of these vendors are just a little better than others. It cost me a couple of bucks to figure out that the lowest priced vendor isn't always the best choice. I have purchased a lot of tools from many vendors and have always had exceptional service except for my one bad experience. I will pay a couple of dollars more for the product and a couple of dollars less for the shipping and buy from a Vendor like Tool King to get the genuine original Milwaukee packaging and first rate customer service. When I purchased my Milwaukee SDS cordless drill from Took King the total cost of the product and shipping was less than $5 more than the lowest priced vendor.

"Where's the Torx bits?" 2010-02-05

These are nice, well made bits in a handy case. There are way too many #2 Phillips bits though and not enough Torx bits for my money. The hinged translucent left side is hard too open while wearing gloves and hard on your finger tips when not wearing gloves. It has three seperate spaces that hold most of the extra bits you'll use. The case is great. It is a heavy plastic and has rubber nibs on all four corners which stop the case from sliding down ramped surfaces. The magnets in the bit extension and nut drivers are all rare earth magnets and work very well. Worth the money in the long run.

A critical and skeptical reading of the packaging indicates that only 6 of the bits are `Shockwave' or `2" Power Bits' (intentionally vague wording?).

In any case, the one "Power Bit" I have used thus far has held up well to the light duty impact driving done (a handful of screws). The other 19 bits, 3 sockets and one bit holder appear to not be "Shockwave" or "Power Bits". I have not tried them yet, they look nice, but I don't expect them to be any better than any other good quality bits that that hold up for a while to (electric) power usage and then wear out.

I'll let you know if I change my opinion after I have used more bits.

The advertising appears deceptive - a sad commentary for Milwaukee.

Purchased this from Amazon awhile back along with the new rechargeble drill from Milwaukee and I gotta say they are one of the best performing driver bits I own. I have several from Dewalt and these seem to stand up to punishment much more without chipping or breaking from the stress.

One of the most notable +'s is the fact that magnetic attachment is one of the strongest I own and even though I've put it through a bunch of torture tests (recently bought a house need I say more?), it's still able to hold a screw tight.

I highly recommend this to anyone looking to purchase a driver set, you won't regret it!

the finish quality far exceeded anything from Stanley=Dewalt. Easy to use container/box. The bits showed very little wear after building two large decks and interior house finishing. The axial out of round connections were minimal compared to the box store examples. What I like the best from Milwaukee tools is you get great value and Quality all the time!

Bought this set when I bought a milwaukee drill and impact driver set. These work great for the impact driver and when I bought them I had the intent that these may not shatter like other bits as they are made for the impact driver itself. It is a nice set to have with your portable drill as it has several sizes with you in one area. Case looks to be durable as well. If you do buy it, when you use it, be sure the "clear-ish" container inside the one door is snapped closed, I neglected to do so and the bits in that part come out even when closed up.

"Great drill bits." 2010-01-16

As a construction professional, I demand the utmost from my tools. Tools that do not perform when you need them are worthless. This drill bit set has a handy, rugged, and compact case to keep the bits organized and sharp, which they are, very sharp. The smaller sizes are duplicated, (i.e. 1/8" and lower sizes have 2) which is helpful since they are typically the ones that get broken most often. You get a back up bit right out of the box! Very nice! The only thing that would have made it better for me would be having 2 1/4" bits, but that's just because that is the most common size I tend to drill. All in all a very terrific set. Highly recommend.

My first disappointing experience with these was drilling a door jamb to relocate a striker plate. Needs a little precision, right? Not with these bits, which walk like a dog right out of a punch mark. Second job, pre-drilling nail holes in oak trim, on the bench in my workshop. Simple job, right? Not for these bits, broke one in two pieces with surprisingly little effort. Of course, the other bit in the same size finished without any problems. Both of these things tell me there's a quality control issue. Be warned! It's like putting cheap tires on a Porsche, these bits are the most vital but weakest link.

I didn't expect much with bits at this price, but realized yesterday trying to put a pilot pole in a simple piece of hardwood that these are some of the dullest bits I've encountered in many years of bargain-bin hardware shopping. Shocking to have the Milwaukee name on it... if their Sawzall was of this quality a lot of remodel projects would never get done.

On the plus side, the case is solid and easy to open/close and the bits are easy to get in and out. Two stars just for that. I'm going to swap out some of my drill bits from better kits and I think I will be happy.

I think these drill bits are really worth the price. Nice case also, dropped it several times and haven't had any problems with it opening or with bits coming loose. I have drilled several holes in 1/8 inch steel with the 5/16 bit and it is still running strong unlike a different set of drill bits I paid the same price for. This set is perfect to carry with your portable drill so you have what you need where you need it.

"Good Everyday Tool" 2010-01-10

I have used this tool several times a week since purchasing in mid 2008. The real test was installing over 100 ft of fencing which the gun handled just fine. Otherwise, I use the Milwaukee for primarily light duty work.

Pros:

-Easy to hold ... fits in your hand nicely with little to no fatique over long term usage.

-Powerful for a small 12V unit.

-Light comes in handy in reduced light work.

-Batteries hold their charge with repetitive driving of screws. Drilling will discharge any battery at a much faster rate ... this gun is no exception.

-Easy to change out bits

Cons:

-No place to store a second on-board bit. Only a problem if you have to switch between phillips and slot screws.

-The trigger just recently started giving me periodic problems ... gun quits working.

-Does not have the muscle to drive long screws (such as cabinet screws) at an acceptable rate or depth. but then, that's not the intention of this tool.

Aside from the current trigger problem I have been VERY happy with the Milwaukee.

I bought this driver for my self last month after using one at work for the past year and a half. I drove 3" screws into 2X8 PT last year with this driver albeit not too many of them (was just testing it). My boss has also bought one for personal use. My hand/arm would get tired from using the 18-28 volt drills we had and this 12 volt easily stepped in when needed and was great for tight areas too. Highly recommended.

P.S. Bought for $99 from Amazon when my office was paying $129 through a Milwaukee rep. Can't beat Amazon's price + free shipping.

A great milwaukee tool. I finally wore out my old 14.4v milwaukee and I was going to upgrade to some of the new full size lithium units until I was able to use a m12 driver that my friend had. This little driver is great, did everything I wanted.

So, the fact that it drives screws is not that all impressive, my 14.4v did that just fine. The great thing about this and why I gave it five stars is the weight. Most of the time it isn't an issue but I was remodeling my basement and doing a lot of overhead work, that is where this tool shines.

"Great tools, horrible batteries" 2010-01-11

I bought this combo kit from Amazon about a year ago. The tools themselves work well for what they are designed for...light chore duty around the house. I would imagine they could take on bigger jobs if pressed as well. However, BOTH batteries from this kit have stopped taking a charge. They stopped working after less than 15 uses. I bought and returned this exact same kit previously because of the same exact thing. Milwaukee needs to address this battery issue. I gave the kit one star because the tools are only as good as the batteries. Now I am forced to buy 2 new batteries. Screw you Milwaukee.

I purchased this Milwaukee 12 volt combo drill/impact set after checking out other brands of the same style, including Snapon.

Milwaukee beat them all on torque, including the much touted Makita. The rpm is very fast for the impact, as is the drill, although a bit slower.

After owning these for over two months now, I can say that they are also very good on battery life and this is being used in a professional automotive shop daily.

Milwaukee has a winner here!.

Great product. I don't know how I lived with out the impact before. I used it side by side with my Makita 18v driver. It was slower and battery ran out of juice quicker, but it worked well driving in 3" lags as well as setting up kitchen cabinets. Wished the led lights had a time delay after using letting go of the trigger like makita's do. The impact will definitely be the most used tool in this kit. The light's magnet didn't have as solid of a grip as I'd like.

I would not trade in my old 18 volt Milwaukee cordless tools, but there are many times I need to get in a tight space or just don't need the extra power (with the extra weight that goes along with it). This set is great for that. The lithium ion batteries are great in that they have the gauge, but when they quit that is it. With the old NiCads you could get that last screw in maybe w/o having to grab another battery.

"large selection but akward chuck design and big case" 2010-01-07

This is a well built kit in a nice storage case with a strong latch. It is a very complete set of 1/4" drills and drivers but is actually missing key items. Quite a few drill sizes that one would want to use for hard and soft woods for #4, #6, #8, #10, and #12 screws are not included in this large set. There are also double ended screw driver pieces that cannot be used in a screw holder which limits their value.

The quick release chuck is interesting in that in order to release a drill bit the outer collar has to be pulled in the same direction as the drill insert which means you need to use both hands to get the bit out and this is hardly a quick process. It is the opposite of most quick change arbors and not as easy to use.

The case is larger than is practical for carrying around in a pouch on a tool belt or even putting into a tool box. It seems to be intended for a shelf or drawer in a house or garage and pulled out for special projects. For anyone wanting a kit with pilot bits and screw driver bits for use with wood screws the RocklerRockler Deluxe Insty-Drive 9-pc. Tapered Drill Bit/Countersink Set Insty Drive sets provide better pilot drills with countersinks and the cases are small enough to easily fit in a pouch or pocket. I hadn't really tried to use this set of drills and drivers, but I found that one of the drill bits (1/4 inch) would not fit into the Milwaukee Compact Driver. I called Milwaukee Customer Service to ask for a replacement part, and was told that it was under a 30 day warranty and I needed to send it back to the vendor (Amazon).

I complained that it seemed unreasonable to send the whole set back because of one part, but they said that was my only option to get the part replaced.

The power tool is excellent but I will be getting driver bits and drill bits from other sources.
